In sourcing conversations, wire harness and cable assembly are often used interchangeably. For an engineering review, however, the distinction changes what the factory needs to know.
A wire harness is typically an organized bundle of discrete wires, terminals, and connectors, held together by ties, tape, sleeves, or conduit. It is usually designed for the internal wiring of equipment, where routing branches and breakout points are defined on a drawing or a nail board.
A cable assembly starts from a cable — multi-conductor, shielded, coaxial, or custom — and adds terminations, connectors, overmolding, or protection at the ends. Environmental exposure, flexing, shielding, and jacket material usually matter more here than in an internal harness.
If your requirement is inside a cabinet or product enclosure, describe branch points, wire list, connector part numbers, and identification. If the assembly runs between equipment or outdoors, add cable construction, shielding, ingress protection targets, and movement or vibration exposure.
You do not need to classify the project perfectly before sending an RFQ. Share the application and installation environment, and the engineering review will confirm which construction, testing, and documentation path fits.
