A strong RFQ gives an engineering team enough information to assess feasibility, clarify assumptions, and prepare a meaningful quotation.

Start with the latest drawing revision or wiring list. If several revisions are circulating, identify the one that should be used for the quotation so that later changes can be tracked clearly.

Include connector and terminal part numbers whenever they are known. A photograph can help with an early discussion, but the part number and mating interface are more useful for a production review.

Describe the wire or cable construction, including conductor requirements, insulation or jacket expectations, shielding, flexibility, temperature, and any chemical or environmental exposure.

State the expected prototype quantity, annual demand, delivery target, packaging, labeling, and inspection requirements. These details affect how the project should be reviewed and sampled.

If a requirement is not yet confirmed, label it clearly. This avoids incorrect assumptions and makes the quotation process easier to audit.

A useful RFQ does not need to be perfect before it is sent. The purpose of the first review is to identify missing information and agree on the next technical decision.

Once the drawing revision, connector part numbers, and open items are listed, the same file can be reviewed as either a Custom Wire Harness or a Cable Assemblies requirement. The distinction is practical: branched internal wiring needs a wire list and breakout points; a jacketed run between equipment needs construction, length, and end preparation. For a custom wire harness review, these documents help confirm terminals, covering, and identification. For an OEM cable assembly review, the same package helps confirm jacket, shielding, and termination at each end. If a detail is still undecided, leave it marked as open so the quotation does not treat it as released.

Put the quotation baseline on one cover sheet

List the assembly part number and revision, then identify the drawing, bill of materials and wiring table that belong together. Give each connector end a reference such as J1 or J2. For each connection, record the source cavity, destination cavity, wire size, identification and any splice. Mark the viewing direction; a wire-side view is not a mating-face view.

Separate quantity tiers and inspection costs

Request separate lines for evaluation samples, a pilot lot and recurring order quantities. Identify one-time fixtures or test setup separately from the unit price. Annual demand is planning information, not a commitment to buy that quantity in one batch. Ask the quotation to identify exclusions and substitutions so supplier offers can be compared on the same basis.

For every open item, record the decision owner and the stage by which it must close. An alternative terminal may remain open for feasibility review; the approved terminal and wiring cannot remain open at production release.
