A photo or physical sample is enough to open a technical conversation. It is not enough to release a production quotation by itself. The goal of the first review is to turn what can be seen or measured into a controlled brief, while keeping unknowns clearly marked as open.

If the original drawing is missing, send the clearest photos you have, the sample itself if it can be inspected, and the minimum information below. This gives the engineering team a way to confirm what is known and identify the next missing input.

1. Pin count, pinout, and wire sequence

Count the positions and identify the connector orientation or key. Provide the pin or cavity number, the wire color or marking, the circuit name if known, and the destination at the other end. If you can perform a continuity check on the sample, record which pin connects to which pin rather than relying on the apparent wire order in a photograph.

Show both the mating-face view and the wire-side view when possible. State whether any positions are unused, whether branches or splices exist, and which details are measured versus inferred. A photo should support the pinout; it should not silently replace it.

2. Connector part number or a measurable interface

Send the manufacturer and connector part number if they are printed or documented. If no part number is available, provide measurements and interface details: position count, pitch or spacing, housing dimensions, keying, latch or thread, mating direction, contact style, cable entry, and the approximate cable outside diameter.

Measure from a defined view and include a scale in the photograph. Note which dimensions are approximate. A family name or visual resemblance is not enough to select a production counterpart, especially when two housings look similar but use different contacts, seals, or keying.

3. Quantity tiers

Separate the quantity for evaluation samples, prototype or pilot builds, first production, and expected recurring lots or annual demand. Include the quantity per variant and any target timing you already know. A single total quantity can hide a very different sourcing decision from a small sample run followed by repeat production.

If the volume is not forecast yet, say so. The quotation can keep the volume as open, but it should not assume that a sample quantity and a production quantity have the same materials, inspection, or packaging scope.

Testing and marking

State what must be tested or recorded: continuity and short testing, fit and mating, polarity, insulation or withstand testing if required, pull or crimp checks, sealing or environmental tests, visual inspection, or dimensional checks. Identify whether each check applies to the sample, every assembly, or a defined lot sample.

Also describe the marking and traceability you need, such as part number, revision, wire identification, label location, lot code, barcode, or packaging label. If no marking is needed, say that explicitly. A sample that looks correct can still be difficult to control in production when identification is left until the end.

What can remain open

The connector source, exact cable construction, jacket material, finished length, overmold or backshell, IP target, label format, packaging, and test method can remain open at the first review when they are genuinely unknown. Mark each item as open and ask for the consequence of each option, rather than allowing a guessed value to become the quotation baseline.

The items that should not stay implicit are the pinout or wire sequence, the connector interface or measurable dimensions, the quantity tiers, and the tests or markings that determine acceptance. If one of these is not available, state the gap and the measurement or decision needed next.

Minimum package for a useful first review

Send the photos or sample description, pinout or continuity notes, connector part number or measured interface, sample and production quantities, application and installation context, required tests, marking and packaging notes, and a short list of open items.
